Printmakers Open Call: Milan Residency Fellowship Summer/Fall 2024
Recipient Announcement
The jury:
Mary Crenshaw, multimedia artist, printmaker
Andrea Chiesi, painter, printmaker, teacher at Brera Academy of Fine Arts
Guido Pigni, artist printmaker and founder of PigPrints
is pleased to announce that Karen Daye-Hutchinson of Belfast, Northern Ireland, is the recipient of the 2024 PigPrints Printmaking Fellowship. Karen has been awarded a two-week fully-funded residency in our Milan studio and a € 500 stipend.
The committee of reviewers agreed that Karen’s work stood out for its overall quality and variation of her print techniques, with her intaglio work combining technically superb execution with a consistent artistic vision. In her etchings and other types of prints, Karen conveys a personal and unique style that captures the essence of her imagination and experiences. An ability to experiment with different printmaking methods, while maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout her body of work impressed the jury. Moreover, her dedication to exploring themes of identity, memory, and cultural heritage resonated deeply with the committee members.
We are confident that Karen will benefit greatly from the opportunity to further develop her practice during the residency in Milan, and we eagerly anticipate the new artistic directions she will explore as a result. Congratulations to Karen Daye-Hutchinson on this well-deserved recognition!
Karen Daye-Hutchinson studied Fine Art at both Belfast and Manchester. Specialising in hybrid printmaking, book art and sculpture; her work reflects an interest in habitat, architecture and literature. Using line and colour as a language to explore the parameters of printmaking, with symbolism as an allegory; deconstructing situations, fairy tales, nursery rhymes or poetry that are part of childhood and adult culture.
Karen Daye-Hutchinson will be artist in residence at PigPrints in March/April 2025
