FAQ
RESIDENCIES
Q I’m not a printmaker. Is the residency open to any kind of artists?
A Not any actually. The resident artist has an exclusive studio/apartment, suitable for painting (an easel is provided) or drawing but not for sculpting for example, using hazardous materials and mechanic tools or noisy machines. On the other hand if you are an artist who needs total solitude and silence to create you have to be aware that the private studio is next to the print workshop where other artists may work during the day (mon-fri 10 am to 6 pm).
Q Do I have to submit a portfolio and be selected to make a residency at PigPrints?
A No, everybody is welcome here. As anyone works individually at his/her skill level there’s no portfolio review for those who want to make a residency. Only it is important that you are already proficient in intaglio techniques as technical assistance is not provided and you have to be able to work independently.
Q Can I bring my partner?
A We see the residency as a working opportunity rather than a holiday so we encourage artists to consider it as a time to take a break from everything and everybody being part of their daily routine. That said, partners are welcome as working artists or not.
Q You said you have special emergency programs for artists who want to take a residency at PigPrints’. How does it work and how can I apply?
A We are aware that not all artists can afford residency fees. Some may be experiencing a time of personal or financial difficulties and need some kind of break to get back in the saddle again. Just let us know and we’ll see what we can do. We can normally offer a one week residency but besides that do not subsidize anything else. The visiting artist is responsible for meals and transportation to and from Milan and non-basic printing materials. In this case there’s also a selection based on a portfolio review.
Q Do you require that accepted artists be fully vaccinated from COVID-19?
A We are against any kind of discrimination based on race, sex, age, identity, nationality, political views, religion, personal opinions etc.
So the answer is: no we don’t.
FACILITIES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Q I work with other printmaking techniques such as silkscreen and lithography. Can I use them at PigPrints?
A No, our two presses are for intaglio print only. You can use them for lino/woodcut but you have to bring all the tools you will need.
EXHIBITIONS
Q Are you exhibiting only etchings and only the work you print in-house?
A Not necessarily. The printshop is the backbone of our gallery’s activities but once we schedule an exhibition with an artist or a group of artists we are pretty open to different opportunities. So we may exhibit prints printed elsewhere or exhibit other original works alongside the printed papers.
CO-WORKING
Q Do you offer contract plate making and printing services?
A Yes we do, we print for artists, publishers, galleries etc.
Q Can you undertake any projects?
A The studio manager, Guido Pigni, is often complemented by other specialists for large projects, ensuring that the best hands are available to deliver an excellent result. When the scale of an undertaking demands it, the publishing programme can be developed in tandem with other companies.
