The winner of the 1st PigPrints Etching & Drawing Student Prize is:

Rob Miles, The Royal College of Art, London UK
with his drawing “Day in, day out”miles_rob

Here’s the artist’s statement about his work:

This drawing comes from a series of works I have been making of double images.
I am interested in the challenge of drawing something twice, so that it is the same, but different, and how this affects the way we look at a picture.
For this drawing, I have looked at the domestic, regularly used objects in the kitchen – cutlery. They are taken out and put back in the tray everyday – there is an order and routine that is parallel to our own every day – the same things, but always slightly different.
This forces me to really look at what I am drawing, as the actual detail is very different, even though the general composition is the same.

Comments by the jury:

We liked Rob Miles’ work immediately but we liked it even more when we read his statement with the concept and the motivations that were behind it.
It’s a delicate drawing that combines observation and invention without resulting in a mere illustration.
While it comes from a very personal feeling, it is a vision that may belong to anyone’s daily experience.
The balance between a good (and yet unpretentious) idea and a beautiful drawing that can also “speak by itself” is not something easy to achieve. Rob Miles’ “Day in, day out” has it all to become a wonderful etching.

Rob wins a money prize of € 1000 and the possibility to produce a PigPrints edition.

We have decided to award a 2nd prize to Taltal Levi from the Neue Kunst Schule of Basel (Switzerland) for her drawing “Longing for summer”. Unfortunately not a money prize this time but the student is also offered the possibility to make an etching edition with Pigprints and join our gallery.

The artist’s statement:

Summer is approaching. My heart is beating.
My skin is pale, ready to be kissed by the sun.
I’m dreamy at the sea, I’m happy!
